Let Me Count the Ways

I received a rejection letter today from a swanky, downtown law firm. I didn't cry or stomp around in anger. Instead, I gathered up the letter, along with my used Kleenexes (I am still sick), and tossed it into the wastebasket. I know other people would be inconsolable, but I am relieved. I am relieved that I do not have to:
  1. work weekends
  2. leave my spouse to shoulder the brunt all of the childcare duties
  3. subjugate my needs for the needs of The Firm
  4. wear a suit to work every day (Thank God)
  5. worry that I will not be allowed to telecommute or to take time off for kid activities for fear of being seen as a slacker
  6. worry about whether my being the type of involved parent that I am will make me less valuable in the eyes of The Firm
  7. worry that I will not have a job in eight years because I couldn't "cut it."

It also helps that I had a lunch meeting with a state Supreme Court justice, two Court of Appeals judges, two non-profit Executive Directors, one law firm partner, and one law school professor who all treated me like an equal.

Good for you!!! I don't think you'll miss big firm life. I clerk for a non-profit law firm and while the money is not big firm money, neither are the hours. It is pretty strictly 9-5 and a weekend would be rare. Like one or two a year, rare. I like that I can still do the lawyer thing without giving up my family. It makes a huge difference in my sanity!!! Happy job hunting!!
