The Making of a Media Whore

I haven't written any substantive posts lately because - well - there's nothing important enough going on iny my life at the moment. Until lately.

As a Boulderite, I feel compelled to comment on this situation. Let me preface my comments by saying that I felt (and still do) like most of the country: the Ramseys had something to do with JonBenet's murder. I don't think the parents did it - may Patsy Ramsey rest in peace - but I DO think there are lots of things the Ramseys chose to withhold from the DA and the Boulder police. Of course, those two branches have done little to redeem themselves and at the very least are guilty of under zealousness.

A similar crime occurred in a mostly black Denver suburb and the media frenzy and constant police pressure surrounding the parents was so pervasive that it contributed to the early demise of the step-mother. Although Patsy Ramsey's death was untimely, I don't think anyone can persuasively argue that media pressure gave her ovarian cancer.

But, back to John Karr. Whatever he has done, why is it newsworthy that he ate pate and drank champagne on the flight from Thailand? He is after all a suspect. Yes, he confessed to the murder but DNA will prove whether his confession has merit or whether he is just another attention seeker who will manipulate the media.

Either way, the media will be there to document it all and he will realize his goal. If he is the murderer, then there will be no shortage of news specials profiling the enigmatic Karr. If he isn't the guy, then he will trade his prison cell for Oprah's couch and the "searing" questions that she levies against him. And, once he's on the couch, he's a household name. His face will be on the cover of every magazine and national newspaper in the country. Really, it's a win-win for him and it gets him out of Thailand. My two cents? He's not the guy. But, let's see what the District Attorney - in their infinite wisdom and renewed zealousness - can prove.
