Hard Rock Mama

Having my mom around - as in ten minutes away from my house by car - has been very, very difficult. She moved to Colorado in June. It's November and she still does not have permanent employment. I am worried about her and I vacillate daily between giving her money and yelling at her to just get a damn job. Any job. I usually do well at biting my tongue, but only because I can bitch to Madhubby immediately afterwards.

I try being sympathetic but I'm failing miserably at it and the days are ticking by, her cash reserves are steadily being depleted, and I can help. But, I won't. I will not enable her. There are jobs out there that don't require much from her, but she refuses to apply for them. She won't try. And I've given up.

My mom is the same way. I often feel like I'M the mom, because I have to push her to do things that other adults would just go ahead and do. We're just waiting for the day she ends up living with us, because she has no money, no savings, and no retirement. Ugh.

It's SO frustrating. Does your mom live nearby, too? How do you deal with her? I've been very passive-aggressive (not inviting her over too much), but I'd like some long-term coping skills.
